GOOD LEADERSHIP COMMUNICATION Name Class Date Good Leadership Communication Introduction Communication as a process of transferring information to a recipient from a sender is one of the basic elements in management functions. Communication refers to the ability to interact or communicate effectively with persons in a socially appropriate and acceptable way (Omrcen, 2008). It is one of the virtues organizational leaders must have to achieve success in their duties. Therefore, a good leadership communication refers to the ability of one being able to communicate effectively having in mind a clear vision towards their goals and objectives (Bawany, 2014). Great leaders need to posses these skills; they should be great communicators (Bawany, 2014). Can there be a great leader without them being communicators? This question determines the character of a leader and it has proved that in order for one to be great leaders they must possess good communication skills (Omrcen, 2008). Therefore, the thesis of this paper is to provide an argument on the classical management theory concept that depicts communication as a downward process where great leadership communication is shown in organizations. Communicating courageously A good leader will not be intimidated by any manner, hence they will provide their findings courageously to their staff members. One way of earning the title of being a great leader in an organization is to communicate honestly and also to be open (Ziek, 2014). Even though you are prone to making mistakes, these errors you will be making will be better compared to the uninspiring and sanitized communications that companies have adopted to use. Being courage is better because you will be able to face all what comes to you; this reveals that sometimes you will not be able to obtain answers correctly or not answering the questions at all (Ziek, 2014). All you need to do as a leader is to admit it. As a leader, your junior staffs will have to understand you basing on the type of leadership style you have imposed on the organization (Edgar, 1993). They will respect and understand your honesty and courage. Therefore, it is wise for a leader to be able to communicate courageously a way of employing good leadership communication characters in organizations. Focus and stability Another concept that leaders in the organizations will have to employ to depict good leadership communication is through focus and stability. What does focus and stability entail? Focus reveals the source of attention for leaders to stay on projects while stability provides the probable time limit they can subdue to these projects (Moira, 2015). According to research, an effective leader who employs good leadership communication skills should be able to focus imperatively on the projects and also be stable; that is to remain calm even if they are under pressure (Moira, 2015). In an organization, it is not a surety that all projects will go on according to the plans, they may as well take a longer time to accomplish. It is upon these times that leaders are being tested on their skills where they need to show up their judgments and rationality as a part of a good leadership communication (Moira, 2015). It should be evident that good leadership communication should be employed in organizations to ensure leader’s focus and stability is achieved. Leading by example In relation to the classical management theory that communication is a downward transfer of information from management to staff it is true. In some instances managerial leaders are to train their staffs of what they are undertaking (Kenward, 2005). It is from this point of view that leaders are leading by example. This is one of the strategies of good leadership communication leaders have in organizations. According to Kenward (2005), he has proved that leaders will have to abide and live by the same regulations in which they expect their followers to abide and affirm to them. They should allow their members to participate so that they can utilize their strengths and also to give credit where it is due (Kenward, 2005). Leading by an example gives a clear picture in ensuring your followers do exactly as you have done and wished for. It is a good leadership style that most organizations and leaders need to adopt it (Kenward, 2005). Motivation and Energy Good leadership communication should entail energy and motivation. We will have to face the hard truth. No one in this world would like to have and work with disengaged and pessimistic leaders (Gamble, 2013). These types of leader will render most of projects in the organization not to go as planned. Leadership motivational and dispositional abilities in organization normally reveal the difference between teams work either in absolute dysfunction or cohesively. The idea that is behind the motivation and energy that exists in leaders is to enlighten the staff members of what should be expected out of them (Gamble, 2013). Do motivational skills help in leadership? A motivational skill provides a stepping stone in conducting and improving one’s spirits in working. Highly and effective organizational leader who possesses motivational skills boosts team’s morale and at the same time motivating them (Edgar, 1993). Leadership motivation and energy gives members an influence to work towards the goals and objectives of the organization. Therefore, acquiring of motivating and energy in leaders facilitates a lot in accomplishing organizational goals as a result of adapting leadership communication (Gamble, 2013). Fairness and objectivity Another strategy and characteristics that do not correspond to the classical management theory on the concept of communication is through fairness and objectivity. Leaders who are in the management role need to have qualities that they should abide by them (Barrett, 2008). The idea behind the adoption of objectivity and fairness came upon due to the complex project leaders used to give to their members. They posed a lot of risks to the team for example, once the classes clash; there was a need to act in fairness in solving the issue (Barrett, 2008). Strong leaders need to be inclusive in the way they communicate in order to overcome differences in the organization that might arise. Good leadership communication entails a leader to act fairly when negotiating of solving a difference that has arisen (Barrett, 2008). On the other hand leaders too need to have an objective seen; they are in a leadership position (Katherine, 2012). They are the ones in control of the entire group, hence they should show effective leadership communication practices. Leadership communication in the organization should be displayed in the way leader reacts to differences, solving them through objectivity and fairness (Barrett, 2008). This is another way to prove good leadership communication in any organizations. Be aware of everything communicates Another principle that leaders need to follow that will substantiate them to good leadership communication is through understanding that everything communicates. Leaders who understand this principle and follow it become great leaders in their organizations (Shaw, 2008). Despite the downward classical theory concept, leaders should not only communicate to their staff, but they should also expect their staff members to communicate back to them (Shaw, 2008). In an organization, policies, programs and tools have been designed strongly in order to communicate effectively than any other type of marketing system. As a leader what you normally do and the way you act, clearly communicates more effectively than the words that are coming out of one’s mouth. Everything is a matter of communicating (Shaw, 2008). One should understand each other responses in an organization so as to achieve goals and objectives. It has been proved that great leaders are also the great communicators therefore it is one of the essential conditions to achieve to become a good leader (Shaw, 2008). The audience is your output A great leader puts their effort towards their audiences. A leader cannot communicate anything not unless you have heard something from your audiences. In an organization, a leader need to obtain a positive feedback from their staff as a surety that information has been passed through. In depicting good leadership communication skills, a leader should be able to understand their audiences (Kenward, 2005). They are part of their success in the organization since it is from their members that leaders’ achievements can be determined. For an example, in response to marketers they are aware of psychographics and demographics of their audiences they need to sell their products or services to (Katherine, 2012). These marketers can tailor messages and channel their communications to their audiences. Also, organizational leaders have been asked to act the same as these marketers (Kenward, 2005). They should know and be aware of their members to ensure effective communication as part of leadership communication strategy; the audience is your output, a measure of success or failure. Conclusion Good leadership communication has been seen as the major element in following organizational goals and objective to realize success. Leadership as a character needs to be practiced effectively since it is a determinant of an organizational prosperity or failure (Shaw, 2008). By observing the above mentioned principles in this paper, it will ensure the organization incur success in the long run of its various opportunities. Therefore, as part of the classical management theory concept in the communication process, it has been declared as downward, hence leaders carry the most crucial role in ensuring their members achieve the best. This is done by leaders who have leadership communication skills. Therefore, good leadership communication in any organization needs to be adopted by leaders in exercising their power over junior staff to realize organizational goals.
