As the story progresses the patterns of the plot become tighter, and threaten to drain the life out of the characters. It can be seen how the characters in the story have matured and how they have handled their life situations out of love for themselves, for their loved ones, for family and for friends (Walter). On a personal point of view though the story also depicts man’s losses in life still the title lived up to what the story is all about, love is still largely the driving force of man in doing wonderful things unimaginable.

Every person fail sometimes but nevertheless it is not proper to cling on to the loss forever up to the point of existing as being invisible. Leopold Gursky may have been clinging long to the losses of his life that before the final years of his existence he was able to realize that it pays not to be a person of loss but to have a name marked in the history of life, his own life. It took him many years to finally realize that he made himself miserable from the years he have consumed himself in solitary despair of losing all the people he cared for.

He may have accepted all his losses but his being was swallowed whole by these failures. The history of love can also be contradictory named a history of loss because it portrays the losses in the actuality of man from which most readers can relate because it resembles the reality. The degree of realism in the book is something that most readers would find it readable. Reading between the lines tickles the imagination of readers relating real life experiences with what is actually going on in the book.

The book captures the drama of the everyday person- in life, in love and the struggle to stand up again despite life’s challenges. One of the losses depicts in the story is the loss of love. Gursky lost his love when the girl that he most truly loves, Alma, married another man in the idea that Gursky is already dead. He soon finds out when Alma told her they have a son but it is too late so she refused to come with him again. Alma died but his love never really did, what was left was regret that things have happened in between that changed their destiny but the pureness of love was never really lost, he only regrets and hopes in one corner.

Every day he seeks for a lost love, the love from Alma that was hindered by situations and the love from his son that never knew him. Loss of hope is another theme of the story. Gursky’s amazing noble ‘The History of Love’ was thought to be lost, the greatest symbol for his love for Alma. More than that Gursky fears that his light is fading and that no one will remember him, he is invisible to the world and for once before everything fades he wanted to make a mark and to connect to the world through his book but his hope dimmed with the information that his book was lost in a flood.

Another example of loss of hope in the story is when all his life Gursky went on observing his son from afar that later died without never having the courage to stand up and be known as his son’s real father. Now the fear of death coming for him without being known to the world is the greatest for he have let some people pass through among him. On the brighter context of the book, it is the power of love that keeps the story alive and going (Conway). The love for family is
